The Department of Chinese Language & Literature of Nankai University is one of the earliest established disciplines in Nankai University in terms of its disciplinary affiliation. It has gone through a process of development from the joint formation of the School of Literature with Peking University and Tsinghua University during the Southwest Associated University period to the re-establishment of the School of Literature after the demobilization of Nankai to Tianjin in 1946; from the Department of Chinese Language after the restructuring of the national faculties in 1952 to the establishment of a new physical and comprehensive School of Literature based on it in 2000.

After the 1980s, Mr. Zhu Weizhi and Mr. Xing Gongwan were successively appointed as the head of the Department of Chinese Language and promoted the progress solidly step by step. He promoted the newcomers, established academic echelons, and gave priority to the goal of raising the academic status of Nankai Chinese, so that the discipline development of the whole department had a clearer direction and practical plan and path. At the end of 1994, the Department of Chinese Language became one of the first bases for talents training in fundamental disciplines of liberal arts in the Ministry of Education. After that, Professor Chen Hong took over as the head of the department and continued to be committed to the overall improvement of discipline construction, level of school-running and quality of talents training.
